Maintaining Personal Hygiene During Pregnancy

Importance of Hygiene During Pregnancy

Good personal hygiene during pregnancy helps prevent infections, promotes comfort, and supports overall health. Hormonal changes can increase sweating, vaginal discharge, and skin sensitivity, making regular hygiene practices even more important.

Bathing and Skin Care

Daily bathing with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap is recommended. Avoid very hot baths or saunas, as elevated body temperature can affect foetal development. Keep skin moisturised to reduce itching and stretch marks, using safe, pregnancy-approved products.

Dental and Oral Hygiene

Pregnancy hormones can increase the risk of gum disease and cavities. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss regularly, and schedule a dental checkup during pregnancy. Inform your dentist that you are pregnant so they can take appropriate precautions.

Intimate Hygiene

Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid douching or using scented products in the genital area. Increased vaginal discharge is normal during pregnancy, but any change in colour, odour, or consistency should be reported to your doctor.
