Understanding Body Changes During Pregnancy
First Trimester Changes
During the first 12 weeks, the body undergoes significant hormonal shifts that can cause nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and frequent urination. The uterus begins to expand, although the bump may not be visible yet. Mood swings and heightened sense of smell are also common.
Second Trimester Changes
Often called the most comfortable trimester, weeks 13 to 27 bring visible growth of the belly, foetal movements (quickening), and skin changes such as the linea nigra and stretch marks. Some women experience improved energy levels and appetite during this period.
Round ligament pain, mild swelling, and nasal congestion may also occur as the body adapts to the growing baby.
Third Trimester Changes
The final trimester brings increased weight, back pain, difficulty sleeping, Braxton Hicks contractions, and shortness of breath as the uterus presses against the diaphragm. The baby's movements become more pronounced, and the body begins preparing for labour through cervical changes and pelvic pressure.
What Is Normal vs When to Worry
Most body changes during pregnancy are normal and temporary. However, sudden severe swelling (especially in the face and hands), persistent headaches, visual disturbances, sudden weight gain, or significantly reduced foetal movement should be reported to your doctor immediately, as these may indicate complications.
