Workplace Safety for Expecting Mothers

Many women in India continue working through most of their pregnancy. While this is generally safe for uncomplicated pregnancies, certain workplace conditions — including prolonged standing, heavy lifting, chemical exposure, and high stress — may require modifications.

If you work at a desk, ensure your chair provides adequate lumbar support and your screen is at eye level. Take short breaks every 30 to 45 minutes to stand, stretch, and walk. Use a footrest if needed and keep frequently used items within easy reach.

If your job requires standing, request a chair or stool for periodic rest, and wear comfortable, supportive footwear.

Under the Maternity Benefit Act, 2017, women in India are entitled to 26 weeks of paid maternity leave for the first two children. Employers are also required to provide a creche facility in establishments with 50 or more employees. Know your rights and communicate with your HR department early in your pregnancy.

If you experience complications, excessive fatigue, or physical discomfort at work, discuss possible adjustments with your employer and your doctor. Options may include flexible working hours, work-from-home arrangements, or temporary reassignment to lighter duties.
