Nutrition and Care in the Last Month of Pregnancy
Nutritional Priorities in the Ninth Month
The last month of pregnancy is a period of rapid foetal growth and final development. Adequate protein, calcium, iron, and vitamin D remain essential. Focus on nutrient-dense foods rather than large portions, as reduced stomach capacity may limit meal size.
Include foods such as dal, paneer, eggs, leafy greens, and fruits in your daily diet. Dates, traditionally consumed in the last weeks, have some evidence supporting their role in facilitating cervical ripening.
Hydration and Comfort
Drink plenty of water and fluids to stay hydrated. Coconut water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices are good options. Avoid excessive salt intake to help manage swelling in the feet and ankles.
Recognising Signs of Labour
Familiarise yourself with the signs of approaching labour, including regular contractions that increase in intensity, rupture of membranes (water breaking), and the loss of the mucus plug. Contact your doctor or proceed to the hospital when contractions are regular and approximately 5 minutes apart.
Hospital Bag and Preparation
Pack your hospital bag by 36 weeks with essentials for yourself and the baby. Include medical records, comfortable clothing, toiletries, baby clothes, nappies, and any items recommended by your hospital in Visakhapatnam.
